The Supreme Adventure by Robert Crookall is a classic work of twentieth-century psychical research and survival literature, examining reports concerned with death, out-of-body experience and the possibility of continued consciousness beyond physical life. Crookall became known for collecting and comparing large numbers of accounts in an attempt to identify recurring patterns within experiences interpreted as glimpses of an afterlife.

Rather than concentrating upon a single medium or paranormal case, Crookall adopted a comparative approach. He drew upon reports from different individuals and traditions, looking for similarities between out-of-body experiences, deathbed experiences, purported communications from the deceased and descriptions of existence after death.

A central concern of Crookall's work is the proposed process by which consciousness separates from the physical body at death. Drawing upon psychical, Spiritualist and esoteric literature, he attempted to construct a model of different stages or conditions through which the individual might pass following bodily death.

These ideas overlap with concepts traditionally described as the astral body, subtle body and astral plane. Crookall sought to organise diverse reports into a coherent framework and argued that similarities between independently reported experiences might be significant when considering the survival question.

His conclusions remain controversial. Reports of out-of-body states and purported post-mortem existence do not establish scientifically that consciousness survives death, and Crookall's proposed model is not accepted as an established scientific account of dying. The book is nevertheless historically important within the literature of psychical research, Spiritualism and the study of extraordinary experiences surrounding death.

The book explores:

  • Life after death and human survival
  • Out-of-body experiences
  • Separation of consciousness from the physical body
  • Astral projection and the subtle body
  • Experiences reported around the time of death
  • Purported communications from deceased people
  • Different states or levels of post-mortem existence
  • Psychical research and survival evidence
  • Spiritualist and esoteric accounts of the afterlife
  • Consciousness and the nature of death

This title will appeal to readers interested in:

  • Life after death and survival research
  • Robert Crookall and psychical research
  • Out-of-body experiences and astral projection
  • Near-death and deathbed experiences
  • Spiritualism and mediumship
  • Consciousness beyond the body
  • Esoteric approaches to death and dying
  • Paranormal and psychic phenomena

The Supreme Adventure is particularly interesting because Crookall attempted to move beyond isolated anecdotes by comparing large bodies of reported experience. His aim was to determine whether recurring features might point towards an underlying pattern worthy of further investigation.
